The clues are all cryptic and therefore involve some lateral thinking and general knowledge. The answers are all characters from well-known books but not always the main character. The numbers in brackets at the end of each clue are the number of letters in each word of the answer; for example (3,4) means that the first word of the answer has three letters and the second word four. The letters in the brackets are the initials of the author of the book(s) in which the character appears.

Each entry costs £1 and can be paid on this site. If you do a joint effort, please pay £1 for each person who contributes.

The winner of the competition will be the entry with the most correct answers. In the event of a tie-break the winner will be drawn out of a hat. The adjudicator’s decision is final. Contact details will only ever be used to notify you if you win.
